Doctor Who - The Macra Terror Reviewed By @Paul_Bowler

Doctor Who:
The Macra Terror
Reviewed by Paul Bowler

Having seen the image of a giant claw on the TARDIS time scanner, the Doctor, Polly, Ben, and Jamie arrive on an unknown planet in the future where they visit a human colony. They encounter Medok a crazed colonist, who is quickly arrested by Ola, the Chief of Police. The colony seems to be a happy place and is run just like a giant holiday camp. However, the Doctor is uneasy, despite the assurances of the Colony Pilot and the message of greeting from the mysterious Colony Controller who appears on a screen to welcome them.

The colony has in fact been secretly taken over by grotesque crab-like creatures known as the Macra, who have brainwashed the citizens and forced them to mine a gas for them, one toxic to humans, but essential for the Macra’s survival. Ben also succumbs to Macra’s influence and turns against the Doctor and his friends. Fortunately he manages to recover in time and helps the Doctor destroy the gas pumping equipment to kill the Macra. The colonists want the Doctor to be their new Pilot. Appalled by such a prospect, the Doctor quickly guides his companions away, dancing past the celebrating colonists as they depart.

Marvel Movie Updates - Brolin is Thanos and Ant-Man Director

Josh Brolin will play Thanos for the upcoming Marvel movies.  His planned appearance against The Avengers will be most likely in the 3rd installment potentially in 2018 but he may make his presence known earlier than that. One would imagine that Brolin would be the voice actor for Thanos but as with many CG characters in movies lately, could provide the motion capture body for the part as well.

Meanwhile the departure of Edgar Wright from the Ant-Man project is the biggest not-so-good-news to hit Marvel in a while but three contenders for replacing him are being batted around including Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Rawson Thurber (We're the Millers) and Adam McKay (Anchorman). Wright left the project due to creative differences.

Doctor Who - Pop Singer Foxes To Appear In Series 8 of Doctor Who

The BBC today have announced that pop singer Foxes has been cast in series 8 of Doctor Who.  Who? Yes, exactly as not many of us will know who she is. In fact she has apparently won a Grammy so I guess I'm out of touch with recent pop music.  You mean the Go Go's have broken up when did this happen?  But in all seriousness she will be performing a song on the show also.  Here is the complete press release from the BBC Media Centre.

My Displeasure With Marvel And DC and What I Found To Fill The Void

I’ve been a fan of comic books since the late 70’s early 80’s, well; let’s just say it’s been a long time.  I have enjoyed reading the heroes of DC and Marvel every week once I pick up the new books on Wednesday when they arrive at the stores or now when they arrive at my doorstep.   Yes even that speed bump that was the 90’s when the books where short on story and big on flash.  Remember the gimmick covers that came out once a month to boost the sales of books that had a weak storyline.  I do but yet I continued to buy them and continued on into the next century reading and enjoying the various super hero comic books the Big Two released every week.

Synopsis For Blake's 7 Audio Cold Fury

This month's Blakes 7 audio adventure takes place on the ice world Horst Minor.  This story should prove interesting as the original series did not do a story on an ice world at all.  Cold Fury is out now and available at the Big Finish website.
http://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/cold-fury-951

When Travis scores a victory over the Liberator crew, Blake is willing to risk everything in order to get back what is theirs.

The destination is the uninhabited ice world Horst Minor, where eugenics specialist Dr Tirus is working on experiments for the Federation President.

Horst Minor has many secrets. And Blake is not going to like what he finds there…

Written By: Mark Wright and Cavan Scott
Directed By: Ken Bentley

Cast
Gareth Thomas (Roj Blake), Paul Darrow (Kerr Avon), Michael Keating (Vila Restal), Jan Chappell (Cally), Sally Knyvette (Jenna Stannis), Brian Croucher (Travis), Alistair Lock (Zen/Orac), Hugh Fraser (The President), Caroline Langrishe (Dr Tirus),

X-Men Review: The Future Isn't What It Used To Be

The gang's all here - or there ... or somewhere.
If we could time travel, we would have posted this review as soon as the movie was released (or even before at was released ... or even before they started filming), but being the powerless homosapiens that we are, we were forced to fulfill other obligations over the holiday weekend and did not see "X-Men: Days of Future Past" until today.

And that's really the only problem with the film - time travel. Like all other entrants in the genre - take your pick of countless "Star Trek" episodes or movies - the characters who decide that going back in time is the only way to save the present face at least a couple of unsettling questions. One, if they're so brilliant to begin with (paging Dr. Charles Xavier), why did they not think of this earlier? Two, even if the mission fails, what's to prevent them from trying at another point in their own timeline since time is so fluid?

Brush those concerns aside though, and you'll find "Days of Future Past" is a highly enjoyable addition to the Mutant Movie Series in particular and super hero movies in general. Yes, it's even better than "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which is something I did not expect because I thought that movie had set the bar too high for summer blockbusters.

Doctor Who - Moonflesh Review By @WickedlyAce

Doctor Who:
Moonflesh
By Mark Morris
Reviewied By @WickedlyAce

Part One

The Story opens up to the sounds of insects which makes one immediately think of either a meadow or large grounds the slight chill in the air means they have landed in the Autumnal season of October … “Nothing finer!” The Doctor explains. The year: 1911 - at that time that was generally the hunting, fishing, and shooting, season amongst the upper classes of English society. The Doctor walks out cheerful and happy as he informs Nyssa they have landed in Suffolk: England. Understandably Nyssa is rather fed up of always ending up on Earth and sulkily says: “We’re on Earth … again?” leading some people, including the writers of the Vortex magazine to make comparisons with Tegan which, I think are fully justified but I see that as a positive rather than a negative. Soon they encounter a lioness: “Brave Heart, Nyssa!” The Doctor exclaims as Nyssa does not know what to do to help the Doctor, “Have faith, Nyssa, I usually get on well with cats,” Nyssa is rather skeptical, the lioness launches herself at our two intrepid stories - consequently the lioness gets shot by Nathaniel Whitlock, the owner of the Estate they have landed in - next to him a Sioux Warrior name Silvercrow.

A carriage draws up with two men. Father and son: Hector (son) and Edwin Tremayne. Edwin is arrogant, puffed up, pusillanimous and bullies Hector mercilessly about how useless he is and how he will never amount to anything. Nyssa is concerned about how brutal the killing of the lioness was. Hector wants to listen to her thoughts and feelings but Edwin cuts her down by calling her childish and impertinent the Doctor jumps to Nyssa’s defense disabusing Edwin of his bigoted opinions. Nyssa tries to get to know Hector but Edwin takes over the conversation she is horrified at slaughtering animals for pleasure.

Batman V Superman Full Title Revealed

Last week we had the reveal of the batmobile and Ben Affleck in the Batsuit.  Now we have the full title of the movie. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is the full title and well it sure sounds like the beginning of a Justice League lead in movie.  My only concern is that this movie will not focus much on the fight between the two main characters but will end up being a lets get the band together for a big Justice League Movie later on.

Godzilla - In Search of Godzilla - Spoilers

By Ken Parker

One of my co-writers on this blog wrote a nice little review that told me ahead of time whether I would like this film or not.  I don't think we have agreed on a movie ever and since he liked it I figured I would hate it. Truthfully I stayed away from any review including this one but was not surprised by his reactions to the movie.  I, on the other hand, claimed early on that Godzilla was the film of the year for me and it was the one I was looking forward to the most.  A friend who saw it Friday had some issues with the lack of Godzilla in the film and I was fine with this because I did not want to see wall to wall Godzilla. I wanted to see human characters and their interaction with this walking disaster called Godzilla. I knew this would not be as fun of a film as Pacific Rim and since my co-writer, Harvey the Pooka, hates fun films, that would certainly be in Godzilla's favor.

Doctor Who - The Day of The Doctor Wins BAFTA Award

Doctor Who but more specifically The Day of The Doctor won the special fan vote BAFTA.   Doctor Who took home the Radio Times Audience Award but sadly An Adventure In Space and Time did not win anything at all.  Which was unfortunate as I thought AAISAT was marvelous and a true highlight of the 50th Anniversary celebration.

Person of Interest Season 3 TV Report - Spoilers

by Ken Parker

Thoughts - I have always enjoyed Person of Interest and thought of it as a very good show.  For the past 2 seasons this show has upped it's game so much and for a show to do this on a regular basis is such a refreshing thing.  This season saw the death of one main character and the ending of one plot line but out of those two things the show has evolved so much.  Anyone who has just seen a few episodes from season 1 would probably not recognize it today.  The science fiction elements from this show have become more relevant but the characters and storylines have remained rooted in reality and this helps make this one of my favorite shows on TV now.

'Godzilla' review: Return of The King

Ready for his closeup.
This is how you make a monster movie.

The new "Godzilla" is a throwback - and in more ways than one. Just like a onetime popular movie star who resurrects a career, the King of the Monsters makes a triumphant return in the new Gareth Edwards-directed flick. Together, they put all of the pretenders - are you listening, Michael Bay? Of course you're not. You've never heard of this blog - to shame. Not to mention the imagination-starved minds behind "Pacific Dumb."

Doctor Who - Comedian Frank Skinner To Guest Star In Series 8

The BBC Media Centre has released the news that comedian and  TV Host Frank Skinner will be guest starring in series 8 of Doctor Who.  He will be in the episode written by Jamie Mathieson.  You can read the full press release below.

Room 101 host Frank Skinner is the latest name confirmed to guest star in an episode of the new series of Doctor Who this Autumn.

Skinner says: "I love this show. I subscribe to Dr Who magazine, I've got a Tardis ringtone, a five-foot cardboard Dalek in my bedroom and when I got the call saying they wanted me to read for the part, I was in the back of my tour bus watching episode three of The Sensorites. I am beyond excited."

He is currently touring the UK with his stand-up show Frank Skinner: Man In A Suit, alongside presenting the Saturday Morning Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio. Skinner previously appeared in the one-off Doctor Who 50th anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says: “It's no secret that Frank's been pitching vigorously to get into Doctor Who for a while. He's been volunteering to be 'third monster on the left' as long as I've been in this job. But now, in Jamie Mathieson's sparkling script, we finally have a part that can showcase all of Frank's famous wit and charm. Hopefully he'll get out of my garden now.”

The episode is written by Jamie Mathieson (Being Human, Dirk Gently), directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids), and also stars David Bamber, Daisy Beaumont, Janet Henfrey and Christopher Villiers.

Other guest stars confirmed to join Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the new series, which will air on BBC One this Autumn, include Ben Miller, Tom Riley, Keeley Hawes and Hermione Norris.
