Doctor Who - The Waters of Mars - NASA Confirms Findings

By Ken Parker

Sorry, I couldn't resist this article.  It has been a fantastic year for outer space and astronomy fans with the flyby of Pluto and the discovery of Earth like planets out in the Galaxy.  Perhaps the most exciting news was delivered today - evidence of water on Mars.  This was always thought possible but not confirmed until today.

So, Doctor Who fans will obviously think of the episode "The Waters of Mars".

Doctor Who - The Witch's Familiar Review - (Spoilers)

By Ken Parker

So one of the most annoying things about Doctor Who is it's ability to suck one moment and be brilliant the next.  In the first episode "The Magician's Apprentice" we had excellent, followed by horrible followed by excellent script writing and so what better reason to watch the next episode than to see what percentage will suck and could it get any worse?  Well, Moffat surprises me again with a fairly good outing for Doctor Who with some excellence sprinkled with just a touch of bad.

Doctor Who - The Witch's Familiar Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
The Witch’s Familiar
By Steven Moffat

“You are not a good Doctor."

In Steven Moffat’s recent history his second part of two part episodes has failed to deliver. He does really well setting everything up in part one and giving us a cliffhanger to talk over during the week but when we get the conclusion we are scratching our heads going that was it.  Yes, I have not been a fan of Steven Moffat’s two part stories lately as I thought Series 8 series ender was ok and better than normal but other than that he hasn’t done well with the second part since The Doctor Dances back in 2005’s Series 1.

Doctor Who Missing Episode News - Web of Fear Part 3 WAS found but lost again...

By Ken Parker

Some reports out of the Doctor Who convention Pandorica have stated that Missing Episode finder Phil Morris disclosed some interesting information about " Web of Fear."  Back in 2013 Morris returned to previously missing stories - "The Enemy of the World" and "The Web of Fear" but episode 3 of 'Web of Fear" was not included.  It now appears that Morris had found it but in the process of recovering the material, it went missing.  Morris thinks that leaked information that the films were valuable provoked a Nigerian rely station manager to take the film can.  Morris believes that the can was then sold to a private collector.

These films would have been found in 2011 and negotiations took six months before the films were handed over, but once they were, episode 3 was not part of it. Morris wanted to keep all other finds a secret in order not to endanger any new recoveries.  Morris even has a photo of the film cans before episode 3 was stolen.

The eventual announcement was held back a while in hopes of recovering that particular film can but they gave up and went ahead with the announcement in 2013.

When asked if more were found Morris stated that he would not answer that question as it could endanger any future finds.  Morris also stated that now that the word is out that perhaps the person in question would return the film can.

Lots of speculation off of this revelation.  The original announcement of "Web of Fear", nothing was said about this for the missing episode.  Could "Marco Polo" be involved in this somehow.  That story was also attached to the rumor of the finds and that too came off the rumor list before the announcement.

This might have been the reason there was a delay for "The Web of Fear" being released on DVD, hoping that the release on ITunes might prompt the collector in giving up the film can. Anyway, it gives hope that the episode (which features the first appearance by Lethbridge Stewart) might still be out there and will find its way back someday.

Doctor Who - Remembrance of the Daleks Review

With the return of Davros in The Magician's Apprentice we thought it would be good to look back at some of his Classic Who stories.

Doctor Who:
Remembrance of the Daleks
By Ben Aaronovitch

DAVROS:  “The Daleks shall become Lords of Time! We shall become all!”
DOCTOR: “ Powerful. Crush the lesser races. Conquer the galaxy. Unimaginable power. Unlimited rice pudding, et cetera, et cetera.”

The Doctor brings Ace to 1963 London where there seems to be a mysterious van outside the school. What makes this interesting is the strange antenna that is on top of the van.  While Ace goes off to get some bacon sandwiches The Doctor investigates the strange van.  The Doctor’s activities are not going unnoticed as a strange little blonde hair girl is watching everything he is doing.   While The Doctor goes into the van he is told by Professor Jenson that there is strange activity coming from the school which is causing strange readings.  While Ace returns with Mike they are joined by Alison and are informed that something is happening at a junkyard that The Doctor is familiar with.

At the junkyard there appears to be a soldier killed by a deathray as Group Captain Gilmore calls it.  It is a lot more than a deathray as The Doctor has some nasty suspicions on who it is.  After blowing up the barricade it is revealed to be a Dalek.  The Doctor was kind of surprised at the type of Dalek it was as he was expecting a different faction of Daleks.  The two Dalek factions want the Hand of Omega and have chosen Earth as a battle ground for it.  The thing is The Doctor wants them to have it and has been planning this for quite some time and everything is going according to his plan.

Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks Review

With the return of Davros in The Magician's Apprentice we thought it would be good to look back at some of his Classic Who stories.

Doctor Who:
Revelation of the Daleks
By Eric Saward

“When you have become a Dalek, you will suffer for every indignity you have ever caused me.”

The Doctor and Peri have landed on Necros to go to the funeral of his old friend Professor Stengos. The funeral is being held at Tranquil Repose which is a place where people go to be frozen and then awaken when a cure for their disease is found.  On the way the pair is attacked by a mutant and tries to kill The Doctor before Peri hits him with a stick.  Before he dies the mutant tells The Doctor that the Great Healer has been doing experiments on him and others.

Unknown to The Doctor and Peri that the Great Healer is in fact Davros and he made the whole funeral for The Doctor’s friend to get him to Necros.   Davros is using Tranquil Repose for his own bidding as he is using the people in suspended animation to make a new type of Dalek.   Those that don’t work out he process them as food as another way to get funding for his new Dalek project.  The Doctor is starting to suspect something is not right with Tranquil Repose and once he is escorted to see the Great Healer and is greeted by Daleks it all makes sense.  Yet another encounter with Davros himself and this time Davros has the upper hand.

Doctor Who - Destiny of the Daleks Review

With the return of Davros in The Magician's Apprentice we thought it would be good to look back at some of his Classic Who stories.

Doctor Who:
Destiny of the Daleks
By Terry Nation

“If you're supposed to be the superior race of the universe, why don't you try climbing after us?”

The Doctor is surprised to see that Romana has regenerated into the image of Princess Astra.  He says she can’t be like that and tells her to try again.   She tries a whole bunch of different personas but none of them fly.  She finally decides on looking like Princess Astra and The Doctor reluctantly agrees.   They land on a planet that the randomizer has chosen. The Doctor installed the randomizer to prevent The Black Guardian from finding them.

They land on a planet that The Doctor seems to find familiar. All rocky and looks like a quarry The Doctor and Romana go investigating but earth tremors appear to be happening and The Doctor gets trapped under a rock.  Romana tries to go back to the TARDIS to get K – 9 to help get him out.   The Doctor is soon freed by a group of disco dressed robots called The Movellians.  They take The Doctor back to their ship where they tell him that he is on Skaro.

Romana gets back and finds The Doctor gone and goes looking for him when she falls down a shaft. She is quickly frightened as the tremors start up again and this time the Daleks burst through the wall and quickly capture her and put her in a slave detail removing rocks.  The Doctor asks the Movellians why they are on Skaro and they say they are here to fight the Daleks and stop them from getting to their creator.  The Doctor soon realizes that Davros is still alive and that is bad news for everyone in the universe if he is reunited with The Daleks.

Doctor Who - Promo Pics For "The Witch's Familiar"

Doctor Who - Genesis of the Daleks Review

With the return of Davros in The Magician's Apprentice we thought it would be good to look back at some of his Classic Who stories.

Doctor Who:
Genesis of the Daleks
By Terry Nation

“Do I have the right? Simply touch one wire against the other and that's it. The Daleks cease to exist. Hundreds of millions of people, thousands of generations can live without fear, in peace, and never even know the word Dalek.”

The Time Lords have diverted The Doctor, Sarah and Harry to Skaro for a mission of utmost priority. The Time Lords see a time where the Daleks will have destroyed all lifeforms and have become the dominate creature in the universe.  The Time Lords want The Doctor to prevent their creation or affect their genectic development so that they evolve into less aggressive creatures.

The Doctor, Harry and Sarah have been separated.  Sarah is captured by the Thals and put to work on their rocket while Harry and The Doctor have been captured by the Kaleds.  The Doctor and Harry are being intergraded and end up meeting Davros.  Davros is talking to the other scientist and introduces to them to the Mark 2 traveling device.  The Doctor explains to Harry that it is in fact a Dalek.  The Doctor also explains to Harry that they have to stop Davros from creating the Daleks and must do whatever they can to prevent Davros from being successful.

Doctor Who - Tracy - Ann Oberman Returns To Torchwood

Tracy - Ann Oberman returns as Yvonne Hartman in a story set in 2005 before she gets turned into a Cyberman.  This is actually pretty cool as we get some stories of Torchwood before Jack and the gang take it over.  The story sounds interesting and I'm looking forward to listening to it. You can pre order this release that is released in December from the Big Finish website.

Doctor Who - The Magician's Apprentice Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
The Magician’s Apprentice
By Steven Moffat

“Davros knows. Davros remembers.”

After months of speculation and rumors The Magician’s Apprentice has arrived and series nine has now begun in earnest.  The episode opens up with a child who happens to have wandered into an area where there are hand mines and is trapped and can’t get out.   The Doctor soon appears and tries to help the child from the trap until he learns the name of the child.  He then leaves the child to his fate and leaves in the TARDIS.

Doctor Who - The Magician's Apprentice Review - Some Spoliers

By Ken Parker

The Doctor is dying again... OH NO, what will we do.  Missy is the Doctor's best friend (obviously) and decides to recruit the help from Clara by stopping all planes in the world and meeting her in an outdoor cafe for coffee (obviously). Missy cannot find the Doctor anywhere but Clara and UNIT can - he is back in time having a party of a lifetime.  He is driving a tank around, playing guitar and teaching medieval people the word "dude" (of course). Missy using that magical time travel bracelets that are used sparingly in the series transports herself and Clara to where the Doctor is.  An alien who is actually made up of snakes summons the Doctor - Davros is dying.  Davros remembers and wants to meet the Doctor one last time.

Doctor Who - Planet of Fire Review

With Missy/ The Master returning we thought it would be good to take a look back at a few of the classic series stories that feature The Master.

Doctor Who:
Planet of Fire
By Peter Grimwade

“Kamelion, my slave, resist the girl. Have I travelled a billion light years through time and space to be thwarted by this brat? Resist the girl! Kill her immediately.”

The Doctor and Turlough are responding to a distress call which takes them to Earth.  It appears the signal is coming from an artifact that is alien in nature.   They find the artifact by chance when Turlough rescues a drowning Peri.  Peri had the artifact in a bag to take to shore and Turlough notices it’s from Trion and tries to hide it from The Doctor who appears before he could hide it.  In the TARDIS Kamelion set the coordinates for Sarn a planet that is in danger of exploding from the volcanos that are on it.

On Sarn Kamelion is in better contact with The Master and takes his form.  The Master needs the healing factors of the gas from the volcanos to heal him from an accident he had with the Tissue Compression Eliminator.  The problem is The Doctor is in the way and causing a rift from those that believe in Logar and those that don’t.  The Master after chasing Peri around Sarn makes his presence known and to the horror of The Doctor wants to use the people of Sarn for his own bidding.  So it’s up to The Doctor to take on The Master yet again and save the people of Sarn from being killed on a planet that is nearing its end.

Doctor Who - The Keeper of Traken Review

With Missy/ The Master returning we thought it would be good to take a look back at a few of the classic series stories that feature The Master.

Doctor Who:
The Keeper of Traken
By Johnny Byrne

“A new body at last.”

The Doctor and Adric are invited to Traken or diverted to Traken by the Keeper.   The Keeper needs The Doctor to help him to prevent evil to take over the source when he dies.  It appears that a calcified statue called Melkur that had appeared on Traken many years ago hasn’t desolved into the ground as most things that are evil do.  The Keeper is worried that when he dies that somehow Melkur would find a way to get possession of the source and threaten all the tranquility of the Traken Union.

Doctor Who Magazine 491 Details and Wrap Around Cover

Out today is Doctor Who Magazine 491.  It features a wrap around cover and also previews the first four stories of Series 9.

Under the Lake and Before the Flood form Toby Whithouse’s first two-part Doctor Who story – and it hinges on time travel – and fairly mind-bending time travel at that. While plotting and writing, did Toby ever come to regret taking the wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey route?

“Oh never, I loved it! I’ve always wanted to do a timey-wimey episode,” he says. “In fact, it was going to be a lot more timey-wimey, but we lost some of that before we started filming. It’s enormous fun to deposit something in a script, then have the reason for it happen later.”

This is also the first story that Toby’s written to star Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

“I think he’s the most ‘alien’ Doctor we’ve had since the show came back,” says Toby. “Even though the essentials of the character remain the same – his heroism, his brilliance, his enthusiasm – he feels to me like much more of an outsider than Chris Eccleston or David Tennant or Matt Smith were. He’s more strange and otherwordly. That’s really interesting to play with.”

Doctor Who - Here We Go Again "Is Jenna Coleman Leaving Doctor Who?"

A few news sites have picked up on The Mirror's story that Jenna Coleman is leaving Doctor Who. Now The Mirror is a tabloid newspaper and any news from it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It could be true this time as Jenna Coleman has been on the show for about three series.  There has been no response from the BBC or the Doctor Who production staff about Jenna Coleman leaving.  I'm sure when the time is right they will release a statement.  But in the meantime follow the links for more on this story.

Doctor Who - The Daemons Review

With Missy/ The Master returning we thought it would be good to take a look back at a few of the classic series stories that feature The Master.

Doctor Who:
The Daemons
By Guy Leopold

“Chap with the wings there. Five rounds rapid.”

There are strange things going on at Devils End.  There is an archeologist dig at The Devils Hump where a witch by the name of Miss Hawthorne is trying to get Professor Horner to stop as she believes great evil will be released.  While catching wind of this The Doctor and Jo head off to Devils End to Devils End and see if they can put a stop to it as The Doctor believes that Miss Hawthorne is indeed right.   To make matters worse The Master is posing as a Vicar for the town and is hoping that whatever is in Devils Hump will give him unlimited power.   The Master is already using black magic to help his cause and using the gargoyle Bok to do his bidding and to help keep a strangle hold on his control over the town.

What lies in Devils Hump is the alien Azal that looks like a version of the devil.  As they open the hatch of what happens to be his ship The Doctor tries in vain to stop them but is too late as the cavern is hit with a cold blast of air which freezes The Doctor and signals the coming of Azal as he is now free to roam the countryside.  So it’s up to The Doctor, when he thaws out, and UNIT to save all of humanity from Azal and The Master.

With Missy/ The Master returning we thought it would be good to take a look back at a few of the classic series stories that feature The Master.

Doctor Who:
Claws of Axos
By Bob Baker and
Dave Martin

“The claws of Axos are already deeply embedded in the Earth's carcass! Soon it'll activate its nutrition cycle and the feast will begin. The Axonite'll cease to be dormant and it'll continue to grow, gentlemen, until every living thing is consumed.”

A space ship is heading to earth and UNIT is on alert.  The Doctor is curious of its nature but as usual he gets put off by the humans that want to destroy it.  In particular with a Mr. Chinn from the Ministry that orders a missile strike.   When that fails and the missiles given the abort order UNIT goes to the area where the ship has landed which is near a power plant.
