Doctor Who - The Well - Mannered War Review

Doctor Who:
The Well - Mannered War
By Gareth Roberts
Adapted By John Dorney
Starring Tom Baker, Lalla Ward and John Leeson

The Doctor and Romana make an emergency landing when they came to close to the end of the time vortex.   They end up landing on the planet Barclow which is laid claim by two factions the humans and Chelonians.  The two forces have been at war over this planet for a long time.  The only problem is they have been very polite about it and the two commanders are best friends.  Sounds like the ideal planet for The Doctor and Romana to land on as there doesn’t appear to be any conflict for them to help resolve.  Or is there?  There appears to be a dark force involved that is trying to make the war something more than friendly and The Doctor might not be able to stop it.

Doctor Who - Big Finish To Do 10th Doctor Audios With Tennant and Tate

Starting in May Big Finish will release audio adventures of the best Doctor and companion pairing of the new series.  That's right David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be reprising their roles from Series 4 of Doctor Who.  The Doctor and Donna will return in three audio adventures that sees the popular duo taking on evil aliens and once again saving the universe.

This is great news as this was and still is my favorite Doctor and companion pairing of the new show and it will be great to see what the great writers from Big Finish will do with David Tennant's Doctor. If you are a fan of Big Finish and have heard how well they do stories of the Classic Doctor's you should feel excited because these stories might actually be better than the ones on TV.  You can pre order these thre stories individually or together in a special limited edition box set from the Big Finish website.

1.1 Technophobia

When the Doctor and Donna visit London’s Technology Museum for a glimpse into the future, things don’t go to plan.

The most brilliant IT brain in the country can’t use her computer. More worrying, the exhibits are attacking the visitors, while outside, people seem to be losing control of the technology that runs their lives.

Is it all down to simple human stupidity, or is something more sinister going on?

Beneath the streets, the Koggnossenti are waiting. For all of London to fall prey to technophobia...

Written By: Matt Fitton

Cast
David Tennant (The Doctor), Catherine Tate (Donna Noble), Niky Wardley (Bex), Rachael Stirling (Jill Meadows), Chook Sibtain (Brian), Rory Keenan (Kevin), Lukas (Jot Stevens)

1.2 Time Reaver

Calibris. The spaceport planet where anything goes. Where anyone who doesn't want to be found can be lost, and where everything has its price. Where betentacled gangster Gully holds sway at the smugglers’ tavern, Vagabond’s Reach.

The alien Vacintians are trying to impose some order on the chaos. Soon the Doctor and Donna discover why. An illegal weapon is loose on the streets. A weapon that destroys lives… Slowly and agonisingly.

The Time Reaver.

Written By: Jenny T Colgan

Cast
David Tennant (The Doctor), Catherine Tate (Donna Noble), Alex Lowe (Soren), Sabrina Bartlett (Cora), Terry Molloy (Rone), John Banks (Gully), Dan Starkey (Dorn)

1.3 Death and the Queen

Donna Noble has never been lucky in love.

So when, one day, her Prince does come, she is thrilled to have the wedding of all weddings to look forward to. Though the Doctor isn’t holding his breath for an invitation. And her future mother-in-law is certainly not amused.

But on the big day itself, Donna finds her castle under siege from the darkest of forces, marching at the head of a skeleton army.

When it looks like even the Doctor can’t save the day, what will Queen Donna do to save her people from Death itself?

Written By: James Goss

Cast
David Tennant (The Doctor), Catherine Tate (Donna Noble), Blake Ritson (Rudolph), Alice Krige (Queen Mum), Beth Chalmers (Hortense), Alan Cox (Death)

Doctor Who - The Woman Who Lived Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
The Woman Who Lived
By Catherine Tregenna

“I just wanted to save a terrified young woman’s life.”

The Woman Who Lived is the second part of The Girl Who Died but in a roundabout way that it isn’t the continuation of a story that is taking place but instead the continuation of a characters story.  In The Girl Who Died we were introduced to Ashildr who ends up dying.  The Doctor brings her back by using an alien med kit.  Now Ashildr is immortal and The Doctor runs into her again in 1651 and she has now changed and in fact is a Highwayman known as The Knightmare but more to the fact that her persona and her attitude towards life in general has changed.  This disturbs The Doctor and more worrying is that he is responsible for this.

Doctor Who - The Girl Who Died - Review - Spoilers

By Ken Parker

You may not realize this, but this episode, “The Girl Who Died” is the definitive blueprint of a standard Doctor Who episode. It has the Doctor and Clara entering a Viking era village and in a bit of trouble. The Doctor finds a way out by pretending to be something he is not but this backfires. Suddenly an alien race raids the village and kidnaps all the warriors. The Doctor must now work with the village and get them prepared for the battle set for the next day. Clara is relying on the Doctor's usual last minute save the day plan but alas, the Doctor doesn't have one ...yet. Clara attempts to inspire the Doctor to be who he is and with the help Ashildr (Maisie Williams) and a crying baby the Doctor comes up with a plan utilizing his surroundings (no TARDIS and no Sonics). The plan works well but with a catch.

Doctor Who - The Girl Who Died Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
The Girl Who Died
By Steve Mathieson
And Steven Moffat

“I am The Doctor and I save people. And if anyone happens to be listening and you’ve got any kind of problem with that.  To hell with you!”

The Girl Who Died had a lot of buzz going in mainly to see who Maisie Williams would be playing. Back in the summer was the Doctor Who Series 9 trailer and at the end Maisie Williams said this to Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor, ‘What took you so long old man?”  Now that made the interwebs abuzz with speculation that she was playing Romana, The Rani, Susan and Jenny.  I myself was hoping for the Terrible Zodin as some thought it was a younger Missy.  Guess what?  You’re all wrong as she is playing an original character.  Leave it to Steven Moffat to prop up an episode that in all fairness is not that good.

Doctor Who - The Woman Who Lived Trailer

Eye on Sci-Fi - The X-Files, Star Wars, The Martian, SyFy does what it does - cancel shows

October 2015
By Ken Parker

Lots of series canceled, lots of stuff coming up and a look at The Martian movie.

Continuum Series - So after 4 seasons, Continuum is done.  I followed the show since day one and for the most part I found the entire thing enjoyable.  I felt the show never ever was on track with a true direction and that might be representative of the time travel nature of the story.  The show was constantly trying to find an identity and often changed direction.  I don't think it ever figured itself out and even in the final mini season, it just barely managed to put all the pieces together.  It was not a bad show and the ending approached a satisfying conclusion but not sure it was worth the 4 years to get there.  If you are looking for a time travel, conundrum and paradox show that looks at how and why one might want to change history, this series has some great concepts and excellent characters.

Doctor Who - The Warehouse Review

Doctor Who:
The Warehouse
By Mike Tucker
Starring Sylvester McCoy and
Bonnie Langford

The Doctor and Mel have landed in what appears to be a huge warehouse.  What is different about this warehouse is that it is in space and in orbit around a planet.   The Doctor notices that lots of food and supplies are just sitting on the shelves with no hint of being shipped to the planet below.  There also seems to be a strange smell as the travelers encounter a mold that appears to be alive.

Also in this warehouse is a computer that doesn’t appear to be acting correctly and a crew of clones. One set of clones doesn’t seem to be right and insists there is something wrong.   The Doctor is confused and continues to investigate while Mel and the strange set of clones is seeing the supervisor and ends up being forced to fix the computer.  Then there is the problem of the vermin running around the warehouse.  Are they there to invade or something else?  It is up to The Doctor to sort it all out and save the warehouse and the planet below.

Doctor Who - The Girl Who Died Maisie Williams Interview

The BBC Media Centre has released an interview with The Girl Who Died guest star Maisie Williams.

Are you a fan of Doctor Who?
When Doctor Who came back on television a lot of my male friends were really excited. I didn’t know much about it but I watched a couple of seasons with David Tennant as the Doctor. And since I’ve been here, I’ve been questioning Jenna: why are you in a space suit? What’s going on here? Have we met this person before? Does this link back to a previous episode? - anything I can find out. It has been really exciting working on it and I’m so glad to be a part of it now.

Doctor Who - Jamie Mathieson on The Girl Who Died

The BBC Media Centre has released an interview with Jamie Mathieson talking about The Girl Who Died.

"The Doctor meets The Vikings! Of course he does. The only question is, why did it take so long?

Odin has come to visit his loyal followers, the Vikings, and reward their bravest warriors with a place in Valhalla. There’s only one problem - The Doctor and Clara, who are having none of this and smell a rat. They are soon caught up in the middle of a war between an advanced race of mercenary aliens and a village full of angry Vikings, who don’t take kindly to having their Gods insulted.

Doctor Who - Before the Flood Review (Spoilers)

By Ken Parker

After watching a fairly good and sort of creepy episode in "Under the Lake" I was eager to see how the story would conclude, thinking that we were in store for a Moffat like tale from the Russel T. Davies era. What we got was something that resembled that quality but not quite.

Marvel Vs. DC October 2015- The Inhumans delayed, Jessica Jones is almost here, Hulk to appear in next Thor film and two 90's films doomed to not be seen

By Ken Parker

The TV season is back in full force but are the super hero shows any good? We have more shake up news for Marvel and take a look at two documentaries about super hero movies that were never released and one that was never made.

Television - I have to admit that most of my excitement toward Marvel right now is in the form of their Netflix TV series. Jessica Jones is teasing us and I can't wait and now Daredevil will begin to get us thinking about that show... and I can't wait. With the Marvel Netflix Universe doing an excellent job establishing itself, I like the report that there may be a plan down the line to crossover into the other Marvel TV Universe with Agents of SHIELD. As long as they don't do it too often, I like this idea.

Doctor Who - Before the Flood Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
Before the Flood
By Toby Whitehouse

“Clara, I want to talk to my ghost self.”

The problem with two part stories in the new version of Doctor Who is that the second part for the most part has been disappointing or at the very least pretty mediocre and has not delivered on the excitement from the first part that got you all jazzed up for the conclusion.  So far in the Capaldi era the two parters have been mixed with the mediocre Dark Water/ Death in Heaven to the very well done The Magician’s Apprentice/ The Witch’s Familiar.  Before the Flood has the hard task of following the really good Under the Lake and despite not being quite as good as its lead up episode it wasn’t bad at all and was pretty entertaining.
